This Is What KLAS Says About Your EHR Training
06 November, 2024 | 3 Min ReadClinician burnout is a serious issue, and many are eager to tackle it head-on. Today, we are sharing something that sheds light on the root of the problem.
We are doing things a little differently this time—bringing you valuable insights from KLAS research. You’ll see real data on the percentage of physicians citing EHR as a contributor to burnout, along with the financial risks this poses across various care delivery organizations.
But I won’t stop there. You already know how significant this issue is, so we are also including recommended measures, drawn from both KLAS and our own work with top health systems in the US.
Here are some recommendations to ease the burden:
#1 Understand the Challenge Using EHRs is complex, and while you may not control how they work, you can influence how clinicians interact with them.
Both KLAS and I recommend ongoing EHR training. It’s proven to enhance the EHR experience. It doesn’t have to be as intense as onboarding—think of it as a refreshing drink. Even better? Make training accessible at the moment of need (just in time!). Also, since you are going to do training on an ongoing basis you can even cut down the number of onboarding hours. Isn’t that a win-win?
So… what must ongoing training really cover? Anything and everything your clinicians would need to smoothly navigate through their everyday workflow.
Implementing Effective Ongoing Training
Here are key strategies to consider:
- Easy Access: Ensure ongoing EHR education is easy to access (e.g., via a centralized server, LMS, or within the EHR, the way Jeeves does it).
- Engaging Content: Create compelling EHR education by incorporating various options (videos, tip sheets, interactive learning, and more).
- Active Participation: Develop a strategy to encourage clinician participation in ongoing education, and push superusers to help peers.
- Regular Updates: Plan to update course materials frequently to keep content relevant.
- Continuous Improvement: Assess, measure, and modify offerings by role to ensure a comprehensive program. Focus on quality, gaps, delivery methods, and participation rates.
And While You Are At This…Key Questions to Consider:
- How do you create awareness for your EHR education offerings?
- How accessible and searchable is your EHR education content? What specialty-specific EHR education content do you provide?
- How do you help clinicians identify their individual EHR education opportunities?
- How do you prepare your teams for EHR upgrades?
- How do you support the development of robust in-house or super-user trainers?
Answering these can give you a clearer understanding of how well your EHR education efforts are supporting clinician satisfaction and reducing burnout.
By focusing on effective EHR education, we can improve the clinician experience, reduce burnout, and elevate patient care.
Let’s work together to implement these strategies and create a healthier, more efficient work environment.
